FCO Travel Advice on Ethiopia - link
Following advice from the UK FCO Gail Ward and Responsible Photography partners in Ethiopia regret that this year we cannot include the Danakil in our Autumn adventure photography holiday. However you'll still need to be reasonably fit for our exciting and insightful opportunity to experience Ethiopia with us - currently 3 places available. Gail Ward February 18th 2012
January 18th 2012 - Travel News from Ethiopia Following reports of an incident involving tourists close to the Eritrea/Ethiopia border, the Foreign Office have updated their information on travel to Ethiopia. Full details can be read on the FCO website Ethiopia Travel - link to UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What to think about when planning a trip to Ethiopia
British
Nationals require a visa to enter Ethiopia (Link). PLEASE NOTE THAT
WHEN A VISA IS ISSUED IT IS VALID FROM THE DATE OF ISSUE AND NOT THE
DATE OF ARRIVAL IN ETHIOPIA. We advise applying for your visa in advance
and will issue a letter confirming the dates of your holiday and
organiser details. A one month visa costs approx $30.00. Please allow
time for the vaccinations that are required, and malaria tablets are a
necessity - check with your Doctor and please buy malaria tablets from a
reputable source, preferably your Doctor. Bring a medical kit that
meets your personal medical needs together with a basic first aid,
sterile medical kit, remedies for travellers diarrhoea and medicated
hand gel. We have a comprehensive list of things we suggest you take and
are on hand to share our own experience but for medical advice please
refer to your Nurse or Doctor. Some places we stay at do not have
electricity, or it is turned off during the day, so please talk to us,
in confidence, if you have requirements - for example, a fridge in which
to keep any medication. It is a good idea to carry a Doctors
prescription with you for prescribed medication. Travel VisasMost
Nationals need a visa for Ethiopia and all travellers are responsible
for checking whether a visa is necessary prior to their holiday. Visas
are the
travellers responsibility. Please note that a travel visa to Ethiopia is
valid from the date it is ISSUED and not the date of arrival in
Ethiopia. - Ethiopian Consulate in Australia - for New Zealanders and Australians - link

FlightsOrganising,
booking and paying for flights are the responsibility of the
traveller. We are able to discuss flight options and assist with
flight suggestions, but do not make flight bookings on your behalf. Flights to Ethiopia - Ethiopian Airlines direct to Addis Ababa. Emirates, Brussels Airlines, KLM and other airlines via Europe - many flights involve 1 short stop.
Flight Time - direct flights are 9 hours from the UK. NB - Responsible Photography Holidays are organised around the UK Ethiopian
Airlines flight schedules and internal flights included in holiday
arrangements are with Ethiopian Airlines. There may be a surcharge for
internal flights if your International Flight is with an airline other
than Ethiopian Airlines. Insurance - Travel, Supplier and Flight Failure
It
is a condition of booking that comprehensive travel insurance is
obtained that covers 'adventure travel' and is valid for travel to
your choice of holiday destination, from the date your holiday booking
is made. Please check that your travel insurance provides cover for
heights of up to 4000m. Travel Insurance provided with, for example,
a credit card, may not provide adequate cover. The British Embassy or
Consul do not pay for medical or repatriation costs when overseas. A
copy of your travel
insurance and emergency contact details will be required by us prior
to your holiday departure date. We recommend that you purchase
supplier and flight failure insurance so that all elements of your
holiday are insured. What to budget for in addition to basic holiday costPassport,
visa,
vaccination, medical and all insurance costs. Travel to and from
holiday
start location, International flights and all associated costs (taxes,
excess
baggage, airport costs, meals). All drinks, laundry, porterage,
personal tipping (a way of life and expected!) and other personal
items during your holiday. Any optional tours or activities, tipping
of the local driver and/or local guide. Most meals are included, see
holiday description for full details. ©Gail Ward 2012
Holiday MoneyCredit
Cards are not always accepted in the places we go to. Please plan to
take sterling or dollars as well as a credit card for emergency use. A guide on what to budget for/local
costs will be provided. Fitness LevelA good
fitness level is needed for this holiday. Whilst we don't rush -
enjoying the walking and photography which are very much part of this
holiday, you need to be used to walking/trekking different terrains. -
not much is on the flat in Ethiopia! You'll be capable of short
strenuous uphill walks and longer walks/trekking when staying at the
Community or Camping Sites. Remember that you'll also be carrying a
daypac/camera bag with your camera equipment, bottle of water and
waterproofs. Please talk to Gail to clarify.©Gail Ward 2012
