Desert Photo Project

Together with our good friends in the South of Morocco, Responsible Photography are setting up the 'Desert Photo Project'. Whilst local people are already used to camera toting visitors, as well as the more serious photographers - including Responsible Photography Holidays, not many have taken their own photographs. Gail Ward, founder of Responsible Photography,  first visited this southern desert region back in 1981 and since 1995 has seen the area slowly change. Development has accelerated rapidly in the last 4-5 years.  The desert region is stunning, but there are huge environmental issues and, like so many other places in Morocco, the advances of tourism are bringing a mix of changes and benefits, some good and some not so good.

The Desert Photo Project will provide local people - young and old - with the opportunity to have fun with a camera, an opportunity to take their own photographs and - really important - the opportunity to photograph their home, their environment and their life, through their own eyes.

Can you help the 'Desert Photo Project? Do you have an unused digital camera that you could donate? Please make sure it works and has batteries, cables etc.  In addition to small compact digital cameras (20 are required), the project needs a small printer and ink, photo paper, photo albums, crayons, mountboard and a couple of old laptops that are in good working condition.  And, says Gail 'if we could attract a sponsor to help or contribute to running costs, that would be the icing on the cake, or should I say, the frame around the photograph!'.

Ali using Gail's camera in March 2011. It was after this holiday that plans  for the 'Desert Photo Project' were accelerated following the interest shown by our friends in the South, including Ali. He had never used a camera before, but displayed a very good eye for a picture.

The Desert Photo Project will have it's own website soon. Please get in touch if you can help - by email or please telephone Gail - 07808 166138.
